Yorkshire Sculpture Park Visit

October 9, 2025

On Tuesday 29th September Macmillan Academy’s Year 10 art students, Year 10 and 11 textiles and Year 12 art students visited The Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield to explore the work of internationally renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Damian Hirst, Barabara Hepworth.

In addition, art students visited James Turrell’s ‘Deer Shelter’ where they were able to experience immersive art and how art can evoke emotion.  Their experiences were  documented with the aim to make into a collaborative narrative to celebrate their experience. William Kentridge’s exhibition ‘Pull of Gravity’ provided students with the opportunity to see work in the form of film, sculpture, projection and sound. The students were interested in the context of the artwork and how he is influenced by history.

Textile students viewed Lesley Barnes and Ross McAuley’s ‘Fashion Play’ exhibition of bright and bold wooden sculptures inspired by their fashion book of the same name. Whilst exploring the structures of the sculpture park,  all the students took the opportunity to sketch the artwork and landscape, whilst discussing the work on exhibition. We all enjoyed picnicking in the glorious sunshine by the orangery with views across the park land of Bretton Hall.

We look forward to students developing their work in response to this visit. Please watch out for work being celebrated.
